There is nothing special about this blog, just a collection of articles, editorials, news events we come across daily.
A tribute to others like me, who read like crazy. Often the impact of an old but important article fades out, so here I keep a collection of anything which I find worth a look.

6 kg iron in patient's Stomach

Dr. Yadav was stunned of what he saw in the operation theatre. It is not often a doctor sees a patient carrying 6 kg iron- 121 coins, 3 key rings and dozens of nut bolts - in his stomach.

Though the doctor in Chhattisgarh's industrial town Korba successfully completed the two-hour surgery, a question is still hovering in his mind: "How was he carrying six kg of iron-made items for several months?"

Patient Kaleshwar Singh, 26, was brought to Shristi Institute of Medical Research on Saturday in acute pain. After serious blockage was found in his stomach in a sonography, Yadav decided to conduct an immediate surgery."I was stunned to find 421 coins, dozens of nuts and bolts and three key rings in his stomach. Luckily the patient survived and his condition is stable now," Yadav told IANS over phone from Korba, located some 220 km north from here.

Yadav said Kaleshwar was in acute pain for about three months and had consulted a few doctors in his village Korkoma, about 20 km from Korba, but his problem was not detected.Kaleshwar's family members think he is suffering from some mania and he has a habit of eating everything he finds.

Sabeer Bhatia Rocks Again

Sabeer Bhatia has done it again, and this time the product is developed in India.

Well the new buzz in the town is JaxtrSMS. Now you can send free SMS to any national and international number. This application is available as free download for phones based on iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows and J2ME. It works almost like the standard SMS application, you can use a number from phonebook or manually enter the number. What makes it stand apart from other applications like WhatsApp is that JaxtrSMS sends the SMS to receiver's inbox and does not require the recipient to install the app.You can just download and use the app to send SMS to any number... FOR FREE. There are no limits on the length or number of SMS.

Mr.Bhatia acquired this company in 2009, it was almost in ruins then. The founder of hotmail, after completely revolutionizing the emails, is after SMS now. Good Luck!!

West's Financial Crisis

Last week has seen some dramatic movements in the financial markets across the globe, specially US & Britain. Though Washington managed somehow to save its face, the global response to the critical issue has been frightening. Wall Street or Dalal Street, there were few exceptions who were lucky to keep the adverse impact at bay. S&P revised US's credit rating for first time in history, one notch down to AA+ from AAA. The tremors have been felt far & wide.

Approximately a total of $ 2.5 trillion were eroded from the value of stock markets across the globe.
Already fighting with its internal financial turbulence, European markets took the worst hit. German market witnessed a free fall with DAX dropping 10% from year's high. Billions were eroded from Britain's super wealthy with steel tycoon Mr.Mittal taking the worst hit of about 2.16 billion ponds, and just to reiterate, all that within a week.

The fears of another meltdown have stuck the market hard. Raising the debit limit is one thing, but the fact is that US still remains under debt accumulated by the former presidents, most significantly during war torn period under the Bush regime. The rating agencies are speculative and market stressed.

Men... The most beautiful creation of GOD

I think everyone might have read abt Mom's, Wife's and Girl's...
Its time to learn something abt Men...

A boy/man  is one of the most beautiful creations of God.
cid:image001.png@01CC4176.503DB730
He starts compromising at very tender age. He sacrifices his chocolates for his sister.
  cid:image004.png@01CC4178.F7A972A0  cid:image015.png@01CC4178.F7A972A0 cid:image016.png@01CC4178.F7A972A0

Later he sacrifices his love for just a smile on his parents face. He sacrifices his love for his wife and children by working late nights.
cid:image005.png@01CC4177.2C33FCE0

He builds their future by taking loans from banks and then repaying them for the life time. Thus he sacrifices full youth for his wife and children without any complain.

 cid:image017.jpg@01CC4178.F7A972A0   cid:image008.png@01CC4177.A7936470

Believe me he struggles a lot but still has to hear the music (scolding) of Mother, wife and his boss. Yet every mother, wife and boss tries to have control over him.
cid:image018.jpg@01CC4178.F7A972A0

Finally his life ends up by compromising for others happiness. He is that creature of God who no one can compete with.
 cid:image021.png@01CC4178.4A365F20   cid:image027.jpg@01CC4178.F7A972A0

Respect every boy/man in your life. You will never know what he has sacrificed for you.

Just extend your hand when he needs it

Flipkart Rocks!!!

This is not an advertisement.

I am always reading something, and most of the time I am on a hunt for books. During one of my searches last week, I randomly landed on flipkart.com.
Flipkart is offering books at great prices, discounts vary from 30-40%. The fresh smelling copy arrives in a neatly laminated package in no time. A good product clubbed with great price and excellent service raise the online marketing to a hitherto unknown level in India.

I ordered a book on Friday evening and the book delivered on Monday afternoon. Happy with the service, I ordered another 3 books on Monday evening, I was surprised that the books were delivered on Tuesday, that is less than 24 hrs.

If more products are added to the list and the same momentum continues, Flipkart is sure to give ebay a stiff competition . With Amazon destined to enter Indian markets soon, the war of online marketing in India is only going to get tough. It would be great to see an indigenous company emerging victorious. Good Luck!

Massive Uranium found in Andhra

A uranium mine is found at Tumalapalli, the current estimates suggest a massive quantity of 49,000 tonnes, sufficient to supply a 8000 MW plant for 40 years. Srikumar Banerjee, secretray of DAE and chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, announced the discovery during the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the seventh and eighth units of the Rawatbhata atomic power project.

Further investigations are on and the total quantity could be 3 times as much, possibly making it the largest Uranium mine in world.
This comes as a major boost for India, which sees nuclear energy as a powerful resource to satisfy its ever increasing demand of power. India has been dependent on country such as France, Kazakhstan for raw fissile material. India has currently 2 mines, both in Jharkhand with a total capacity of 1,70,000 tonnes. This new discovery serves as a major boost and will reduce India's dependency on foreign supplies.

Moreover the foundation stone has been laid for 7th & 8th unit of Rawatbhata plant in Rajasthan, 2 indigenously built nuclear 700 MW capacity plants. They will be completed by 2016 at an estimated cost of Rs.12,000 crores.

Healthy Longevity, a day not to far?

Well, if words of Aubrey de Grey are to be believed, the human life expectancy can see drastic increment in near future. Within his own lifetime doctors will have all necessary tools to reverse the damage caused by ageing, predicted the bio-medical gerontologist and chief scientist of SENS foundation (research foundation for rejuvenation bio-technologies).

De Grey foresee a time when people will go to a doctor for regular maintenance like stem cell therapy, immune system stimulation, genetic and other advanced treatments to keep them in good shape. He describes ageing as the lifelong accumulation of various types of molecular and cellular damage throughout the body.

"The idea is to engage in what you might call preventative geriatrics, where you go in to periodically repair that molecular and cellular damage before it gets to the level of abundance that is pathogenic," he explained.
How far and how fast the life expectancy will increase is a matter of debate, but the trend is quite clear. Currently average life expectancy is increasing by 3 months every year, and experts claim there will be more than a million centenarians by 2030. Some researchers however say, that obesity may falter the trends towards longevity.

For some the concept of long living is not very fascinating as it associates the images of sick, weak old people and societies who are increasingly less able to cope.
"This is absolutely not a matter of keeping people alive in a bad state of health," he told. "This is about preventing people from getting sick as a result of old age. The particular therapies that we are working on will only deliver long life as a side effect of delivering better health."
De Grey classify cell damaging due to ageing in 7 categories, for which redevelopment technologies need to be discovered if his predictions of regular maintenance and longevity are to come true. For more details  on his theory and SENS foundation, follow the links.

Google +, A rival to Facebook?

And here we go again, another attempt to regain the coveted spot in Social Networking. After a lot of hush hush Google launches its social media tool with best of Facebook + exciting new features. It has already exceeded the expectations of not only googlers but also their servers. The response has been so overwhelming that invitation feature has been disabled as well as old invitations revoked temporarily. Latest message said "Already invited? We've temporarily exceeded our capacity. Please try again soon."

Google + is seen as a major threat to Facebook. The timing for its launch couldn't have been better amid the recent reports of saturation of Facebook users across most of Europe & Americas. Most talked about feature in Google+:

  1. +Circles, where we can create separate clusters of all connected to us to share updates. Its no longer needed to share everything with everyone on the web or everyone connected to us, certainly we would not like to share the same updates with our friends, family & colleagues.
  2. +Hangout, the all new video chat with an upper cap of 10 users in a conference is a befitting reply to skype conference (recently acquired by Microsoft).
  3. +Spark, a suggestion feature similar to youtube, where we can see articles, video which might interest us based on cognitive intelligence.
The fire has prompted Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, to announce exciting new updates to facebook users (Though the features are yet undisclosed). As per the latest updates, even Mark Zuckerberg has opened Google+ account. As they say, its always advisable to keep an eye on competitors.

The speculations are rife, will Google+ dethrone Facebook, as MySpace was dethroned by Facebook?. We will need to wait and watch!

Office goes on Cloud

The office utility from Microsoft, finally goes online. Last week one of the most awaited service from Microsoft was launched with much hype in 40 markets worldwide, allowing users to access Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online, and Lync Products online.
Now the documents can be accessed from anywhere and can be simultaneously worked upon. The idea triggered in 2007 by none other than our own Sabeer Bhatia (also founder of hotmail, first free email service) with the launch of Office Live, followed by Google docs and now Microsoft coming with it's complete Office utility on internet cloud.

Three versions of the product are available:
  1. O365 for SMBs (less than 25 employees) with monthly pricing of $6/user.
  2. O365 for Enterprises with pricing ranging from $2/user to $27/user on a monthly basis
  3. O365Education, that is expected to replace LiveEdu
The product promises to be a cost effective option for users. However, it’s not the direct license cost where customers are saving money. It’s actually IT overheads and administration costs where SMBs are likely to benefit. For example, for a 100 employee enterprise deploying the $27/user/month plan, the annual cost is $32,400 at full price; Microsoft Office 2010 retails at $49,900 for 100 licenses at full price (ex. Implementation and administration). Thus, from second year onwards, Microsoft is actually making more money. However SMBs are actually benefiting as they don’t have to spend too much on IT overhead and infrastructure.

Until now Microsoft has been struggling with piracy, specially in emerging markets with higher growth potentials than the stable markets. Now the users will have a cost effective option, saving a lot of revenue for company. Assuming Microsoft can also maintain 75-80% margins as other SaaS vendors, this could be a win win situation.

Hierarchy at major tech companies

Here is a funny take on how all the biggest tech companies are organized from designer Manu Cornet, via Foursquare product chief Alex Rainert. Rainert notes on Tumblr, "Some really great representations, though I think its little more centralized in Facebook than shown here. Apple & Microsoft are truly hilarious."

N.Korea shuts all universities

TO become a great, powerful & prosperous nation is the ambition of every developing country. A variety of measures are taken globally to accelerate growth in all spheres. In our country India, lot of money is being spent on education for this prospective development and growth.

N.Korea has taken a lot many steps ahead and has announced closure of all its universities for next 10 months. The students will be put to work mostly at construction site and for repair work of agricultural region that were affected by a typhoon recently. Only exemptions are foreign students and those who will be graduating within next few months.

Pyongyang has told the North Korean people that the nation will have achieved its aim of becoming "a great, prosperous and powerful nation" in 2012, which marks the 100th anniversary of the founder of the reclusive state, Kim Il-sung. In addition, Kim Jong-il will turn 70 in February and the "Dear Leader" hopes to be able to transfer his power and an economically stronger nation to his son and heir-apparent, Kim Jong-Un.

I am almost speechless, the analysts in Japan have however claimed that a fear of "Jasmine Revolution" could be the reason to disperse students from campus.

Google Withdraws 2 Ambitious Projects

Innovation and success are two words synonymous to GOOGLE. It is arguably the most successful internet company today. But it has not been there without taking risks. There have been failures with few products not even lasting days.

To the list of flops, Google today added 2 of its most ambitious projects, "Google Health" and "Google PowerMeter", because they didn't get enough traction. These were very ambitious projects: the goal was to remake healthcare delivery, and energy distribution respectively, for the internet age.

There's certainly a lot of potential for the internet to improve things when it comes to healthcare and energy, but marred with a lack of focus and partnerships Google did not do well in this space. Plenty of startups are doing well and we might see a buyout in near future. We do remember buyout of YouTube after failure of Google Video.

Finally an Agreement on DRS

Call it the pressure of BCCI or efforts toward fine tuning the decision system. The controversial Decision Review System (DRS) has been unanimously accepted and made mandatory for all matches after going through crucial modifications.

The line lbw decisions (Hawk Eye ball tracker) which has seen strong opposition from BCCI has been eliminated. Now the batsmen can not review a lbw decision if they feel ball pitched outside the leg or wasn't hitting the stumps, however the decision can be reviewed for an edge.

Sound tracking and thermal imaging have been made mandatory for DRS, they will be mostly useful for close catches and edges. This means for the first time India will be agreeable to DRS in a bilateral series against England. The cost for using DRS is estimated at $5000 a day, that would amount to $25000 for a test. The decision on "how to divide this cost" is yet to be taken .

A heartbreaking SALE

A legendary car, gifted by a driving legend (Michael Schumacher) to a cricket legend (Sachin Tendulkar) for equaling feat of another legend (Don Bradman) has been sold to a builder from Surat.

The car, gifted in 2002  by the automobile major to Sachin when he equalled Don Bradman’s record of 29 Test centuries, raised many eyebrows and has been in controversy even before it touched Indian soil. It has been sold out @ a whopping 1.5 crores. The most lame reason I ever heard of, "Car required a lot of parking space, and Sachin wanted to dispose the car before he moves in his new 5-storey, 10,000 sq. ft bungalow".

So what's next? I just hope Sachin has a lot of space for his trophies or we might see a PadmaVibhushan on sale.

Wrist Computers

DeskTOP --> LapTOP --> PalmTOP --> ...
Sony has come up with this innovative computer design which we can wear around like a designer watch. Still in its naive state, but the idea seems to peep into a whole new generation of future computers. Enjoy some of the snapshots::: Soon we can be sporting cool wrist computers

Poor US of A

This is exclusively for those, who view the healthcare facilities of developing nations with disdain. An old(smart) man took a very calculative risk to land into a prison for free healthcare.

James Verone, of Gastonia, North Carolina, was so desperate to get help for a bad back, foot and growths on his chest that he made the calculated decision to stage the unusual robbery. He robbed the bank for $1.

The unemployed 59 yr old, who can't afford healthcare, walked up to the cashier and demanded $1 from her. He intentionally sat at the couch, waiting for police. Unfortunately for him, he was not possessing any weapon that time, so he will not be in jail as long as he actually wanted to.

“I'm sort of a logical person and that was my logic. This is what I came up with,” explained Mr Verone.

Successful Traits

At school, a banner said in bold, "Winners don't do different things, they do it differently". I just read this at HBR blog, defining that difference.

Decades of research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do. It turns out that even some of the highly accomplished people are pretty lousy when it comes to explaining their secret of success.
  1. Be Specific: Goal to "sleep at 10" is much better and clear than "sleep early"
  2. Seize the moment: In our busy schedules we tend to ignore or fail to notice the opportunity. Was it really not possible to return that call?
  3. Measure Performance: Keep intermediate checkpoints to monitor the progress of goal.
  4. Realistic Optimism: Realizing one's potential is the key to success.
  5. Focus on Improvement: Take that extra step of getting better always. Its not about doing it good, believing that our skills are fixed. Always focus on how to do it better.
  6. Have Grit: Persistence is a very important factor, the rough weathers will be always awaiting. To stand firm and committed at tough times is something many of us fail to do.
  7. Build Will power muscles: Just like any other muscle of our body, the will power also becomes weak if not exercised properly. Be strong and test yourself frequently.
  8. Count those extra miles: No matter how strong you are, there will be limitations. Don't take 2 challenging tasks at one time. Counting those extra miles is extremely important as overtaxing will make us run out of steam temporarily and trigger a downward spiral.
  9. Focus on what to do instead of what not to do: Do we want to give up a bad habit? Research on thought suppression (e.g., "Don't think about smoking!") has shown that trying to avoid a thought makes it even more active in our mind. So better let us work on an alternative action. To control anger, take a deep breadth, etc.
So this is the time to get over the mistakes which derail us from the right track.

India Experimenting

Its been really long, I read an article like this from Indian media. this is from Wall Street journal, worth a read, INDIA experimenting with its primary level education system.

The Right to Education Act, passed in 2009, mandates that private schools set aside 25% of admissions for low-income, underprivileged and disabled students. In Delhi, families earning less than 100,000 rupees (about $2,500 a year) qualify.

Sounds like an excellent idea, a probable thought to bridge the gap between rich & poor society of India.
But is the gap really this small in a rigid hierarchical society like India where rich/poor, employer/servant are 2 different side of coins?

The results obtained so far are frustration and disappointment. The coveted class children come to school prepared with basics like alphabets, colors, and may be some extra general knowledge. Their social skills is in striking contrast to the ones living in slums. Teachers find it hard to focus on the slow paced students, what they could earlier achieve in a week is taking 3 weeks now. Is it fair on the part of kids who have the ability to do better?

Is this jarring juxtaposition justified? It is obviously necessary to bridge this gap, but sometimes the gap is just too wide. The same set of poor students need to be taken care of separately. May be more special classes. As a matter of fact, how about improving the standards of government school? Why enforce private schools to adjust?
